STEAM Week

As STEAM Week draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone responsible for its organisation, particularly our wonderful PLL, Michelle Daly. Michelle co-ordinates this week every year and is so passionate about ensuring that our boys and girls enjoy a range of fun, challenging and educational activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics.

The following is a rundown on how STEAM Week played out:

On Monday morning our STEAM Week started off with a roar – the roar of an engine – as two of our wonderful Prep Parents brought a racing car to St James! They were able to explain the Science behind racing cars. He spoke about friction, speed, aerodynamics, safety, motion and forces. Our students asked well thought out questions and some were even lucky enough
to try on the racing helmet.  A huge thank you  for providing such a memorable experience for all our students.

On Monday afternoon it was time for Street Science with Dr Sharron. Our students watched  and wondered at chemical reactions, (controlled) explosions and Science that made us think!

Over the past three days our students have spent the afternoon exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths through a wide variety of activities across the school with a large band of helpers… teachers, school officers and parents! An enormous thankyou to everyone who has helped to provide our students with the opportunity to wonder at our world around us! Our students have created volcanoes, made slime, completed
engineering challenges, made parachutes, lava lamps and catapults and build circuits to name just a few.

On Friday we will conclude our week with the annual St James Science Fair in the Meeting Room. Students are able to enter a Science Fair project up until the first bell tomorrow morning. Please ensure that a completed entry form is attached to all entries. Each class will visit the Science Fair throughout the day and a team of judges will speak with each of the entrants. Student will be asked to describe their experiment/research, the steps they took and their learning from the task. Winning entries from each year level as well as the St James Scientist of the Year will be presented with a trophy at our special assembly starting on Friday at 2:15pm. All participants will receive a Science Fair certificate.

Students also have the option of participating in the Science Dress Up day on Friday so feel free to come dressed as your favourite scientist!

I would like to send a big thank you to our generous staff and parent volunteers who have contributed to creating a successful STEAM Week. We greatly appreciate your kindness.
We are looking forward to announcing the Science Fair winners in our next newsletter.
