The Arts


St James Primary school features a strong arts program. Specialist teachers in Drama, Dance and Music conduct lessons from 40 minutes with the younger children to 60 minutes for the older children. The art teacher works with children from Year 1 to Year 6 for 40 minutes.

St James boasts a flourishing Music program throughout the school. The classroom music programme is supported by a qualified music specialist. In addition to the weekly Music lesson children have the opportunity to participate in instrumental music and choir.


St James has a vibrant instrumental programme for children in years 3 to 6. Depending on numbers and the talents of the students, the school has a concert band and guitar ensemble.

A specialist instrumental teacher takes the children for one half hour lesson in small groups and another half hour band or guitar ensemble rehearsal during the school day.

The band participates in festivals such as the Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) in August, Music Fest in October/November as well as other times during the year.

Instruments available through the programme are:

  • Wind - flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto/tenor)
  • Brass - trumpet, trombone, euphonium
  • Guitar
